AI agents and engineering

AI agents that do real work.

An agent is useful when it takes a real task off someone's desk — finding the answer, checking the document, handling the request, moving the workflow forward — reliably, inside your systems, with a person still accountable.

  • Conversational AI
  • Workflow agents
  • Enterprise engineering

The work

From first prototype to a system people can use.

Most agent prototypes can demonstrate something. Far fewer can be trusted with a recurring task, connected to the systems that hold the data, monitored in production and supported by the team that built them.

That gap between demonstration and dependable system is where NxtLab works. We combine applied research with production engineering, so the agent is designed around the task, the evidence and the people who remain accountable for the outcome.

What we build

Three buyer problems, not an acronym list.

Conversational AI

The problem

Customers or staff cannot find a reliable answer without waiting for a person.

What we build

Assistants grounded in your knowledge, with conversation context, clear escalation and a brand-aligned interface. EchoX is our productised option; custom builds are available where the interaction is unusual.

Workflow agents

The problem

A recurring process is slow, manual and spread across several systems.

What we build

Agents that retrieve information, analyse documents, draft outputs, call tools and move a task to the next step — with human review at the points that matter.

Enterprise AI engineering

The problem

A pilot has to become a secure, integrated, observable system that can be supported.

What we build

Architecture, integration, retrieval, evaluation, guardrails, monitoring and MLOps. We work within your cloud, identity and data boundaries rather than around them.

Illustrative use cases

What the work can look like.

These are illustrative patterns drawn from the capabilities NxtLab offers. They are not client projects, case studies or evidence of delivery.

Illustrative — not a client project

Internal knowledge

Problem
Policies, procedures and technical knowledge are scattered across documents and people.
Agent action
An agent retrieves the relevant passages, answers with sources and escalates when confidence is low.
Human control
Source citations, access-aware retrieval and a named human owner for the knowledge base.

Illustrative — not a client project

Document analysis

Problem
Contracts, reports or applications take too long to read consistently.
Agent action
An agent extracts fields, compares against criteria and drafts a structured summary for review.
Human control
Confidence thresholds, human sign-off and an audit trail of what was reviewed.

Illustrative — not a client project

Customer support

Problem
Routine requests consume specialist time and responses vary between staff.
Agent action
A conversational agent handles common questions, qualifies the request and hands over with context.
Human control
Clear escalation rules, brand and tone constraints, and conversation monitoring.

Illustrative — not a client project

Research and workflow automation

Problem
A recurring research or reporting task requires searching, synthesising and formatting by hand.
Agent action
An agent gathers sources, produces a draft and routes it into the team's existing workflow.
Human control
Tool permissions, review gates and a record of sources and actions taken.

These patterns are illustrative. They describe what NxtLab can build, not work delivered for a client.

How it works

From input to an outcome someone owns.

Agent workflow — input, action, oversight, outcome
  1. Input

A question, document, event or request arrives from a person or an existing system.

  2. Agent action

The agent retrieves evidence, reasons over the task, calls approved tools and drafts a result.

  3. Oversight and integration

A person reviews where required; the result is written back into the systems that hold the work.

  4. Business outcome

The task is completed faster and more consistently, with evidence of what happened and who approved it.

The exact controls are designed per use case. NxtLab does not claim a certification, guarantee or security accreditation for this pattern.

Engineering depth

The substance behind the demonstration.

These are the practices that make an agent dependable. They sit below the buyer conversation, but they determine whether it survives production.

Retrieval and grounding

Retrieval-augmented generation, knowledge graphs and source-aware answers, so responses are tied to evidence rather than plausible text.

Guardrails

Controls at the model, data and application layers, including access rules, content constraints and privacy protections.

Human in the loop

Clear review points, escalation paths and decision rights for the tasks that should not be fully automated.

MCP and integration

Open, standardised protocols such as MCP where they fit, so agents can interoperate with existing systems and tools.

MLOps and monitoring

Deployment, evaluation and operational practices that keep behaviour observable and changes controlled.

Evaluation

Task-level test sets and review criteria, so quality is measured against the work rather than judged from a demo.

Capability descriptions, not certifications. Security, privacy and regulatory assurance depend on the specific deployment and must be assessed separately.

AI build

Bring us the problem worth solving.

Bring the task that keeps consuming time, the pilot that has stalled, or the system that needs to become dependable. We will start with the work and the evidence.

Use cases are illustrative; no client project or performance metric is claimed.
